AEO and GEO — What "SEO" Means in AI Search
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overview "read" a site very differently than classic Google search does. Here's what changes.
By Easyweb360
Traditional SEO still works — but it’s no longer the whole picture. More and more users get an answer straight from an AI, not a list of ten blue links. That changes what actually needs building.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization) — the classic discipline: optimizing for Google’s ranking algorithm through keywords, backlinks, and page speed.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — optimizing so a voice/AI assistant (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant) can pull a direct answer straight from your content.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — optimizing so ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview actually name your business in a generated answer, cited or not.
All three are separate disciplines, but they share the same technical foundation.
What this actually changes in practice
1. Structured data (Schema.org) — AI crawlers read structured data far more reliably than plain prose. Organization, Product, FAQPage, Article schema aren’t “nice to have” anymore — they’re what these systems actually parse.
2. Direct, quotable answers — AI models “quote” individual sentences from a site. Vague, marketing-heavy copy quotes badly. A specific number or a clear, standalone answer quotes well.
3. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) — a named author, real experience, transparent contact information — these are trust signals for Google and AI alike.
4. Site speed still matters — AI crawlers work within a crawl budget too. A slow site gets crawled less completely.
What we add to every project
On every new site we build, we add full Schema.org markup (Organization, ProfessionalService, BreadcrumbList, Product/CreativeWork where relevant), write FAQ sections as direct, quotable answers, and check Core Web Vitals — exactly what’s implemented on this site (easyweb360.com) too.
The result: a site that’s set up well for Google and for AI assistants at the same time — double the reach, one investment.
